Ingredients

  • For the Mashup
  • 1 lb 450 g smoked or sweet sausage (sliced into rounds)
  • 2 medium apples Honeycrisp or Gala, sliced
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ¼ cup caramel sauce plus extra for drizzle
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar optional, for extra sweetness
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional Garnishes
  • Fresh parsley chopped
  • Toasted pecans or walnuts for crunch

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Cutting board & knife
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Serving dish

Method

  1. Sauté Sausage
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage slices and cook until browned on both sides (about 5 minutes). Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook Onions & Apples
  4. In the same skillet, add butter and olive oil. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and caramelized (about 5–7 minutes). Add apple slices and cook until tender.
  5. Add Sweetness
  6. Stir in caramel sauce, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is well-coated and glossy.
  7. Combine
  8. Return sausage to the skillet and toss everything together. Let cook another 2–3 minutes to heat through.
  9. Serve
  10. Serve warm, drizzled with extra caramel and sprinkled with chopped parsley or nuts if desired.

Notes

Choose mild or apple-flavored sausage for the best flavor balance.
Don’t overcook the apples — you want them soft but not mushy.
For a cozy meal, serve this over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
Add a splash of apple cider vinegar or mustard for a tangy twist.
Great for meal prep — it reheats beautifully the next day!
