Ingredients

  • 3 cups Corn Chex cereal
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
  • 1 cup mixed nuts cashews, almonds, and pecans
  • 1 cup bite-sized pretzels mini twists or sticks
  • 1 cup garlic-flavored bagel chips or cheese crackers
  • 3/4 cup 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Equipment

  • Large roasting pan or two large rimmed baking sheets
  • Large mixing bowl and rubber spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Using a low temperature is the secret to roasting the mix slowly without scorching the cereal.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a very large mixing bowl or a large roasting pan, combine the Corn Chex, Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, mixed nuts, pretzels, and bagel chips. Toss gently to mix.
  3. Make the Seasoning Butter: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder until fully incorporated.
  4. Coat the Mix: Pour the butter mixture evenly over the cereal and nut mixture. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold and stir continuously until all the pieces are evenly coated with the seasoned butter.
  5. Roast Low and Slow: Place the roasting pan (or spread evenly across two large rimmed baking sheets) into the preheated oven. Bake for 1 hour, removing the pan to stir the mix thoroughly every 15 minutes to ensure even crisping and browning.
  6. Cool Completely: Remove the mix from the oven and pour it onto large sheets of parchment paper or paper towels to cool completely. The mix will become even crunchier as it cools down to room temperature.
  7. Store and Serve: Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight container or zipper bags where it will stay fresh and crunchy for weeks.

Notes

Low Temperature is Key: Keep your oven at 250°F (120°C). Baking at a higher temperature will quickly burn the delicate cereal and butter coating instead of crisping it through.
Stir Every 15 Minutes: Do not skip the stirring intervals! Stirring redistributes the butter and ensures every single piece gets properly toasted on all sides.
Mix and Match Add-ins: Feel free to customize your mix with extra items like cheese crackers, rye chips, or honey-roasted peanuts depending on your family's favorites.
