Ingredients
  

  • For the Sandwiches
  • 12 slices of bread white, sourdough, or whole wheat
  • 6 tbsp butter softened
  • 12 slices of cheese American, cheddar, or your favorite melting cheese
  • Optional Add-Ins
  • Tomato slices
  • Cooked bacon
  • Caramelized onions
  • Ham or turkey slices

Equipment

  • Large sheet pan
  • Parchment paper or foil
  • Spatula
  • Butter knife or brush
  • Cooling rack (optional, for extra crispiness)

Method
 

  1. Preheat Oven
  2. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  3. Assemble Sandwiches
  4. Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 6 slices butter-side down on the sheet pan. Add 2 slices of cheese (and optional add-ins) on each. Top with remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
  5. Bake
  6. Place another sheet pan on top of the sandwiches (to press them down for even crisping). Bake for 10 minutes.
  7. Flip & Crisp
  8. Remove the top pan, flip sandwiches, and bake uncovered for another 2–4 minutes until golden and crispy.
  9. Serve
  10. Remove from oven, cool slightly, and slice in half. Serve warm with tomato soup or dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crunch, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on the outside before baking.
Use mayonnaise instead of butter for a tangy twist and crispier crust.
