Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Blanco silver tequila
  • 1 ounce Blue Curacao liqueur
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice about 1 large lime
  • 1/2 ounce agave nectar optional, depending on your sweetness preference
  • Ice cubes
  • Kosher salt or coarse sea salt for the rim
  • 1 lime wedge for rimming and garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or liquid measuring spoons
  • Handheld citrus juicer
  • Margarita glasses or standard rocks glasses

Method

  1. Prepare the Glass: Run the fresh lime wedge around the outer rim of your margarita glass. Dip the moistened rim into a small, shallow plate filled with kosher salt to create an even, salty rim. Fill the prepared glass to the top with fresh ice cubes.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Pour in the blanco tequila, Blue Curacao liqueur, freshly squeezed lime juice, and the agave nectar if you prefer a slightly sweeter drink.
  3. Shake the Cocktail: Secure the lid tightly on your cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and frosty.
  4. Strain and Pour: Remove the lid and strain the vibrant blue margarita mixture directly into your salt-rimmed glass over the fresh ice.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish the rim of the glass with a fresh lime wedge or a twist of orange peel. Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly!

Notes

What is Blue Curacao: Blue Curacao is simply an orange-flavored liqueur, very similar to Triple Sec or Cointreau, but it has been dyed a bright blue color. It provides the exact same sweet, citrusy flavor profile required for a classic margarita, just with a fun visual twist.
Choosing the Tequila: A Blanco (silver) tequila is highly recommended for this recipe. Because it is unaged and perfectly clear, it allows the electric blue color of the Curacao to shine brightly without muddying the visual presentation.
Make it a Pitcher: To serve a crowd, you can easily multiply this recipe. For an 8-serving pitcher, combine 2 cups of tequila, 1 cup of Blue Curacao, 1 cup of fresh lime juice, and 1/2 cup of agave nectar. Stir well and pour over individual glasses of ice as needed.
